The purpose for fireproofing is to create a buffer between a fire and the structural steel supporting a building. This is achieved by applying a cementitious or intumescent coating directly to the structural steel substrate. When structural steel is heated beyond 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, it will begin to deform and lose its strength, thus compromising the structural integrity of the building. The delay in structural failure created by the fireproof coatings allows the occupants time to safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire.
